French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly mourned the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The French director general said he will remember the monarch as "a friend of France" and a "kind-hearted" sovereign who marked his country forever and for a century.
The White House has officially sent its condolences to the United Kingdom and the British Royal Family on the passing of Elizabeth II.
In a tweet in English and French accompanied by a photo of Elizabeth II, Macron stressed that the queen "embodied the continuity and unity of the British nation during more than 70 years of reign."
In the 1980s, Elizabeth II was known as "the travelling queen" as she made more than 250 official visits outside the UK during her 70-year reign, her last trip to the island of Malta in 2015.

The US institution stressed that the United Kingdom is one of its main allies and that bilateral relations were stronger "than ever" under his reign.
