Deaths and injuries leave the earthquake in Mexico

Two dead and 10 injured are recorded so far by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Mexico

R. Gelfenstein - The great earthquake occurred one hour after the national drill that takes place every September 19 to commemorate the earthquakes of 1985 and 2017, which occurred on the same date and is considered the most destructive in history.


The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 quake that struck Mexico on Monday rose by two and the injured went to 10, Laura Velazquez, the National Civil Protection Coordinator, said Tuesday.


They occurred in the port of Manzanillo, in Colima, in the western state of Mexico, where there were also nine wounds, while there was another injured in Coalcomán, Michoacán, where it was the epicenter of the tremor.


"In the state of Colima, two deceased, who were in Manzanillo; a woman who was seriously injured because a wall fell and died, and a man who also suffered serious injuries and died of a roof collapse at a commercial location," Authority said at the Velázquez government's daily press conference.


The head of civil protection reiterated that the extent of the earthquake was 7.7 with an epicenter 63 kilometers south of Coalcomán, Michoacán, 15 kilometers deep.


In Colima, it reported 153 houses affected, 20 properties with structural damage, two temples damaged, seven medical units, five bridges damaged and eight landslides.


During his stay in Michoacán, he declared 30 schools affected, 21 medical units with structural damage, churches affected and a road collapse.


There was also slight damage to Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Nayarit, Mexico City and Mexico, where there were 21 properties.


In the affected states, more than 3,600 elements of the armed forces have been established, Velázquez added.
