R. Gelfenstein - Despite not officially confirming that he will run in the Republican primary for the US presidency, Donald Trump is the preferred candidate to represent the party in 2024, probably against the current president, Democrat Joe Biden.

According to a poll published in July by the New York Times, Trump remains the leading candidate in a hypothetical race against five other potential Republican opponents. 49% of primary voters said they would support the former president.

Next in line is florida's current governor, Ron DeSantis, who has become Trump's main rival. According to the poll, 25% of Republican voters would vote for him in the primaries.

On the other hand, no Republican candidate for 2024, except DeSantis, enjoys significant support among Republican voters. According to the NYT poll, Texas Senator Ted Cruz won 7% support.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Mike Pence and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley each received 6 percent, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo received 2 percent.

As can be deduced from the poll, the biggest threat to Trump within the Republican Party is Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida. Among primary voters, DeSantis was the first choice of younger Republicans, those with college degrees and those who said they voted for President Biden in 2020.

In contrast, of those who voted for Trump in 2020, 44 percent said they had a very favorable view of DeSantis, similar to 46 percent who said the same of Trump.

However, in the race to be the Republican presidential nominee, Fox News' support could be crucial. According to the poll, Trump has a 62% to 26% lead over the Florida governor among the store's viewers.
