Nancy Pelosi arrives in Taiwan amid US-China tensions

R. Gelfenstein - Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, arrived in Taiwan amid rising tension between the U.S. and China.


A U.S. Air Force plane (SPAR19) was in charge of transferring the American officer to this Asian country, where he landed at the Songshan airport, in Taipei, around 22:40 hours. local time (14:40 GMT), according to flight tracking portal Flightradar24.


"Our delegation's visit to Taiwan honors the Unwavering commitment of the United States to support Taiwan's vibrant democracy," he said.


Neither the Taiwanese government nor the government has confirmed whether Pelosi's Asian tour will include a visit to Taiwan, a possibility raised by U.S. and Taiwanese media.


"Our talks with Taiwanese leaders reaffirm our support for our partner and strengthen our common interests, including promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region," he said.


In Pelosi's presence, Chinese SU-35 military jets cross the Taiwan Strait, Chinese state media reported.
