Canada to have the world's first marijuana shop at a university

R. Gelfenstein - One of Canada's largest universities, the University of British Columbia, will house a marijuana shop on its campus, the world's first in an educational facility, despite opposition from Vancouver residents.

The company Burb Cannabis said in a statement that it had received approval from Vancouver officials to open the store at the University of British Columbia.

Burb founder and CEO John Kaye called the decision "a major victory after a contentious debate over public safety and the physical condition of the community," adding that the rejection by campus residents is based on outdated stigma.

Residents near the university campus have expressed opposition to the establishment of a marijuana shop at the school.

A petition, launched on the website Change.org and which so far has 1,891 signatures of support, explains that the opening of the facilities will attract non-university clients or local residents to the campus.

In late 2018, Canada became the first developed country to legalize the recreational use of marijuana by adults.

Since then, the industry has generated sales of 11 billion Canadian dollars ($8.5 billion) and generates about 90,000 jobs a year, according to a report released earlier this year.
